What this guide adds
Version 1.0 turns the battery-passport provisions of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 into a category-by-category implementation map. Its 71 rows identify the legal source for each data point and show whether it is mandatory, optional, conditional or not to be filled or displayed as of February 2027 for electric-vehicle, light-means-of-transport and industrial batteries.
Five practical data groups
- Identification and manufacturing: unique identifiers, the responsible passport registrant, manufacturer details, category, model or serial information, production location and date.
- Materials and circularity: chemistry, hazardous substances, critical raw materials, recycled cobalt, lithium, nickel and lead shares, renewable content, and selected responsible-sourcing and carbon-footprint information.
- Performance and durability: capacity, voltage, power, cycle life, efficiency, internal resistance, temperature ranges, warranty and reference-test information.
- Conformity, repair and end of life: the EU declaration of conformity, waste-prevention information, detailed composition, replacement parts, dismantling instructions, safety measures and test reports.
- Dynamic health and use: capacity and power fade, resistance growth, remaining performance, battery status, cycles, negative events, operating temperature and state of charge.
Category differences that affect system design
The guide should not be converted into one universal list of 71 required fields. For example, the state of certified energy is marked mandatory for EV batteries but not displayed for LMT or industrial batteries, while remaining-capacity and related health fields are mandatory for LMT batteries, not displayed for EV batteries and conditional for industrial batteries. Several lifetime, efficiency and dynamic-performance fields are mandatory for EV and LMT batteries but apply only to some industrial batteries.
Important February 2027 qualifications
The guide marks carbon-footprint declarations, carbon-footprint labels and responsible-sourcing information as not to be filled or displayed as of February 2027 because their passport format still depends on a forthcoming implementing act. It also marks the printable and downloadable instructions-for-use field as not displayed at that point while the relevant application provisions await the Omnibus IV process.
How to use it
- Classify the battery under the definitions in Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.
- Map each data point to its source system, responsible owner and update frequency.
- Implement applicability rules by battery category instead of storing a single static checklist.
- Track later delegated and implementing acts before treating a temporary status or reporting format as final.
